Security Guards Roles & Responsibilities

A private security officer is a person who works to protect property and people.

All security officers are required to go through basic training mandated by the Security Industry Authority in the United Kingdom so they can get a better understanding of the security and emergency needs. Some officers are required to complete police certification for special duties.

Patrolling is usually a large part of a security officer's duties. Often these patrols are logged by use of a guard tour patrol system, which require regular patrols. The most common object used was a mechanical clock system that required a key for manual punching of a number to a strip of paper inside with the time pre-printed on it.

In the UK, it requires a permit to work as a security guard. This license is called SIA Licence and may include a criminal background check and / or training needs. Most security guards are unarmed and have the same powers of arrest as a private citizen, "a private person" arrest or detention of citizens. "If weapons are carried, additional permits and training are usually required in US but is not easily allowed in countries such as UK, France and others. Major economic justification for security guards is that insurance companies (particularly fire insurance companies) offer substantial discounts to rate sites that have a presence in 24 hours. In fact, a security guard on site increases the likelihood that any fire will be reported to local fire before a total loss occurs.

Some courts are entrusted or delegated to run the security guards and giving them more powers limited, particularly when used in the protection of public goods such as public transport stations. Some security guards, especially in hazardous work such as body guards and night guards are off duty police officers. Except in these special cases, a security guard who misrepresents the police commit a crime.
